Health Wealth Wellness & Disease Prevention
Direction Home Akron Canton offers a variety of proactive Health Wealth classes that are designed to keep aging individuals healthier longer. How? By teaching them how to better manage their current diseases and symptoms. Health Wealth offers innovative, evidence-based disease prevention/health promotion education with curriculums developed by a team of physicians, biologists, public health researchers and educators.
All programs are FREE and open to the public. Take a look at our available programs:
Chronic Disease Self-Management (CDSMP)
CDSMP is a series of six (2-1/2 hour) workshops designed to help adults of any age gain confidence in their ability to manage symptoms and understand how their health problems affect their lives. Chronic diseases include but are not limited to: arthritis, hypertension, lung disease and heart disease.
Diabetes Self-Management (DSM)
DSM is a program that builds on the successful structure of the CDSMP program, but is tailored specifically to adults living with type 2 diabetes. This program is conducted in a series of six (2-1/2 hour) weekly workshops at locations within your community.
Tai Chi-Moving for Better Balance
The Tai Chi program offered by Direction Home Akron Canton is an education and exercise program that aims to strengthen muscles and prevent falls. Over the course of twelve 1-hour classes, participants will learn 8 forms based on Yang-style tai chi. The exercises are easy to complete and can be done from a sitting or standing position.
LIVE VIRTUAL CLASSES: We want you to stay healthy, strong and active, so we will be using Zoom, to bring Tai Chi: Moving for Batter Balance into your home. It is recommended to attend as many classes as possible; we will learn one to two forms each session until all 8 forms are learned. Class requirements: a computer with speakers and a webcam (to ensure participants are safely learning the forms). To easily ask questions during classes, using the microphone on your computer is also recommended; there is a chat feature to type questions if needed.
September 1st - September 25th: Sarah Gibbs will be your instructor for this workshop. We will meet every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 1:30 pm-2:30 pm. CLICK HERE to register for the class.

Matter of Balance (MOB)
MOB is an interactive education program that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels. Participants learn to view falls as controllable, set realistic goals, change their environment to reduce risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance. MOB meets once per week for 2-hours over a period of eight weeks.
Powerful Tools for Caregivers (PTC)
Powerful Tools for Caregivers classes help caregivers take better care of themselves while caring for a friend or relative. PTC is co-led by two trained volunteer coaches who will share strategies to reduce stress and deal with the difficult emotions family caregivers experience. PTC meets once or twice per week for 90-minutes over a period of six sessions.
September 16th - October 2nd: Live virtual workshop. Lori Smith and Theresa Niewiadomski will be your facilitators for this 6-session workshop. We will be using Zoom to meet each Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 am -11:30 am from September 16th through October 2nd. It is recommended to attend as many classes as possible; we will learn new information each class.
