This workshop will focus on trauma and discuss how trauma can affect each person in different ways. In the DSM-5, the chapter--- “Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders” will be discussed and the following disorders will be explored: Acute Stress Disorder, Adjustment Disorder, and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).   Trauma will also be defined, symptoms outlined, types of trauma will be examined, and trauma indicators will be presented to help with the assessment and diagnosis of the trauma related disorders. Treatment methods will also be discussed and outlined.

The computer game Kahoot will be played and attendees will need a 2nd handheld device to log into the game page, (Kahoot.it). The game questions will pertain to this workshop. Other computer programs (Doodle, Mentimeter,and Padlet) will be used to assist in interaction during large and breakout rooms discussions.   

Objectives:

  • Define and identify the types and symptoms of trauma. (Note:  Present the theoretical and historical issues of child abuse and neglect as this relates to the historical framework of trauma and how it affects adults later in life)
  • Discuss how adverse childhood experiences can have long-term traumatic effects
  • Review the disorders in the DSM 5-chapter Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders: Acute Stress Disorder; Adjustment Disorder; and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
  • Know various treatment methods that may be utilized to assist in the treatment process when dealing with trauma and diagnosable disorders
  • Learn different strategies that can help facilitate discussions with clients related to traumatic experiences

About the Speaker Linda Davis, PhD, LPC, LSW

Dr. Davis worked for Summit County Children's Services for 30 years.  During that time, she worked as in Intake worker, a Night Intake supervisor, a Crisis Intake Hotline Supervisor, Educational Resources Supervisor, Visitation Supervisor, and a Quality Improvement Manager. Dr. Davis, having successfully completed a two-year Ohio Child Welfare training, the Trainer Certificate Program, now spends her time as an independent trainer and consultant. Her areas of expertise currently include mental health counseling, visitation, attachment theory, child development, research, supervision, foster care, and assessment. Dr. Davis teaches seminars at Cleveland State and has also led classes on the Psychology of Learning, Child Development, Teaching and Learning Strategies, and Research at the University of Akron.  She infuses each of her sessions with knowledge, humor, and lots of tchotchkes.      

REGISTRATION & CANCELLATION INFORMATION:

Class sizes are limited, so register early.  Classes with low registrations may be canceled.  If the class is canceled or moved, participants will be contacted via email at least 24 hours in advance.

Classes start and end on time.  To ensure a quality experience for all, please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the class start time and find a seat.  CEU credits will be adjusted 0.25 credit hours for every 15 minutes not in attendance; adjusted certificates will be emailed to participants within 3 business days after the training.  Hard copies of certificates will be mailed upon request.

It is difficult to control room temperature to everyone's comfort level.  We suggest you dress in layers that can be adaptable to warm and cool temperatures.

For auditing purposes, arrival and departure times and signature are required on attendance sheets.
