Summary

Caregivers of elderly loved ones play a vital role in bridging the communication between their family member and the healthcare team. Medical appointments can often feel overwhelming for caregivers and patients, however, there are strategies caregivers can use to ensure that they are effectively advocating for their loved ones. During this interactive session, participants will learn how to prepare for appointments, communicate effectively under time constraints, and ask the right questions. Strategies will be discussed alongside realistic scenarios caregivers face. Whether participants are new to caregiving responsibilities or have years of experience, they will leave with actionable techniques to be a stronger advocate for their loved one’s health and wellbeing.

Objectives:

  • Prepare effectively for medical appointments by organizing key information, questions, and concerns in advance
  • Communicate clearly and concisely with healthcare providers about their loved one's symptoms, changes in condition, and care needs
  • Ask focused questions to clarify treatment plans
  • Navigate challenging conversations, including advocating for second options or expressing concerns about care

Speaker: Dr. Andrea L. Meluch
