This training focuses on learning about the history and evolution of addiction and addiction treatment.  Historical models of addiction and treatment will be presented and contrasted with more contemporary models including the Disease Model and Relationship Model.  Attendees will learn about the biopsychosocial, spiritual, and cultural factors that are associated with addiction.  A discussion will be held on issues such as stigma an awareness that effect society's views of addiction. 

Objectives:

  • Understand the history of addiction
  • Learning historical and contemporary models of addiction and treatment
  • Understand the biopsychosocial, cultural, and spiritual factors associated with addiction
  • Learn the Disease and Relationship Models of Addiction
  • Discuss issues in addiction including stigma and awareness

This training focuses on the process of recovering from addictions.  A focus will be placed on the cyclical nature of recovery, and how helping skills can be utilized to aid clients in finding recovery.  Attendees will focus on the importance of creating testable, observable, and measurable recovery plans, the importance of values in recovery, and will gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the role of 12-step programs.

About the Speaker:  Stephen Kerestes, LPCC-S, LICDC

Stephen Kerestes, LPCC-S, LICDC is a coordinator of the School Based Mental Health team at CommQuest Services, Internship Coordinator and trainer for Pyramid Services.  He also serves as an adjunct professor for Motivational Interviewing at Walsh University. Prior, he was lead counselor at the Smith House, a residential treatment center for adolescents with substance abuse and mental health problems.  He specializes in teaching social responsibility to clients.  A graduate of the University of Akron, he has received extensive training in Motivational Interviewing as well as in problem gambling counseling.  He shows great passion in his work with clients as well as in supervision, training, and program development. He takes a creative approach to counseling and is a dynamic and engaging speaker.

REGISTRATION & CANCELLATION INFORMATION:

Class sizes are limited, so register early.  Classes with low registrations may be canceled.  If the class is canceled or moved, participants will be contacted via email at least 24 hours in advance.

Classes start and end on time.  To ensure a quality experience for all, please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the class start time and find a seat.  CEU credits will be adjusted 0.25 credit hours for every 15 minutes not in attendance; adjusted certificates will be emailed to participants within 3 business days after the training.  Hard copies of certificates will be mailed upon request.

It is difficult to control room temperature to everyone's comfort level.  We suggest you dress in layers that can be adaptable to warm and cool temperatures.

For auditing purposes, arrival and departure times and signature are required on attendance sheets.
