Summary

Those in the helping professions often have high rates of stress which can become chronic and affect both the quality of their work with clients and their personal lives.  Several recent research studies have focused on this phenomenon; describing, comparing and contrasting the concepts of burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary trauma symptoms for those in the helping professions.  This workshop illustrates these research findings and then focuses on the risk factors for developing one of these conditions.  It then provides an interactive format for participants to discuss both prevention and or treatment strategies for burnout and compassion fatigue in their own situations in working with clients and their families.

Objectives:

  • To describe & differentiate the signs of burnout, compassion fatigue and secondary trauma for professional caregivers.

  • To identify common characteristics of those who maintain a positive or balanced outlook.

  • To describe 13 ways of preventing burnout & compassion fatigue and maintaining a balanced outlook.
