Summary

Have you been looking for the right tools to help your clients achieve positive outcomes? Research has shown that coaching skills, when utilized adequately, have the ability to positively influence client outcomes in the behavioral health arena. Clients enjoy the benefit of feeling heard and supported and health professionals enjoy the benefit of meaningful ways to set goals with clients that are much easier to achieve because the clients are active participants. We will discuss why we resist change and how to assess client' readiness to proceed with change. After reviewing basic coaching skills, we will dive further into motivational interviewing skills as well as effective ways to provide education and set goals. Health coaching skills are only fully learned through experience. After each educational session, we will practice each skill discussed to be sure that they are learned effectively. Our session will conclude with providing ways to implement information into practice for health professionals devoted to social work and other areas of behavioral health.

Objectives:

  • Use the stages of change model to assess clients’ readiness for change
  • Identify active listening techniques and recognize client talk types
  • Learn the 4 processes of motivational interviewing
  • Use the chunk, check, chunk and SMART methods to set goals with clients
  • Demonstrate health coaching skills by practicing them with colleagues
  • Identify ways to implement health coaching into social work practice
