Summary:

This workshop will identify and explore ethical dilemmas as represented in the novel Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. The themes, values, ethical dilemmas, and lessons learned by the actions of Dr. Victor Frankenstein will be discussed. The discussions and film clips/case examples will assist in illustrating the ethical dilemmas in Frankenstein with those in the fields of social work and counseling related to ethics, practice, and standards.

Objectives:

  • Identify and discuss the different ethical dilemmas that Dr. Victor Frankenstein (in the novel, Frankenstein) faced and how those issues are similar dilemmas in Counseling and Social work.
  • Understand, identify, and integrate the ethical issues that are presented in the novel Frankenstein and discuss how these issues relate to 11 ethical standards and guidelines of Counseling and Social work.
  • Identify ethical codes, categories, and standards of practice of the American Counseling Association and the National Association of Social Work and discuss what Counselors and Social Workers can learn from the ethical struggles of Dr. Frankenstein.
