Summary

This lively, interactive webinar will consist of a combination of evidence-based research approaches and case studies as well as opportunities for participants to discuss challenging clients who present with symptoms of depression or who talk about not wanting to live. Built into the program will be time to give suggestions and discuss treatment planning ideas, provide feedback and suggest resources for older adults and late life families.

Objectives:

  • Identify risk factors contributing to late life depression & suicidal intent
  • Evaluate instruments used to identify and assess depression in older adults
  • Identify various categories/types of late life depression
  • Evaluate evidence-based strategies for depression treatment in older adults
  • Formulate approaches to deal effectively with depressed clients identified in the community

About the Speaker: Paula Hartman-Stein, Ph.D

Paula Hartman-Stein, Ph.D. is a nationally recognized psychologist, consultant and educator who specializes in the challenges of late life. She obtained a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Kent State University and had specialty training in geriatric mental health through the Geriatric Research and Education Center at Case Western Reserve University.

In addition to working for over 30 years in direct care, she has edited two books, Enhancing Cognitive Fitness in Adults and Innovative Behavioral Healthcare for Older Adults, published numerous journal articles and book chapters and has been a regular contributor on aging issues for The National Psychologist newspaper. Because of her interest in writing, she has used narrative techniques as therapeutic interventions and self-care strategies, leading narrative gerontology workshops nationally and in Australia. Retired from clinical practice, Dr. Hartman-Stein teaches through webinars and is an adjunct professor of Psychology at Brevard College in Brevard, North Carolina.


REGISTRATION & CANCELLATION INFORMATION:

Class sizes are limited, so register early.  Classes with low registrations may be canceled.  If the class is canceled or moved, participants will be contacted via email at least 24 hours in advance.

Classes start and end on time.  To ensure a quality experience for all, please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the class start time and find a seat.  CEU credits will be adjusted 0.25 credit hours for every 15 minutes not in attendance; adjusted certificates will be emailed to participants within 3 business days after the training.  Hard copies of certificates will be mailed upon request.

It is difficult to control room temperature to everyone's comfort level.  We suggest you dress in layers that can be adaptable to warm and cool temperatures.

For auditing purposes, arrival and departure times and signature are required on attendance sheets.
