Summary

The longer people live, the more likely they are to experience major changes in their living situation, family, friends, activities, and health. Through research, we know that these transitions can at times be very difficult and even life threatening. Even when these changes are desired or perceived as positive, they can provoke anxiety and complicate family relationships. This workshop looks at common transitions in the later years of life and suggests strategies to assist elders and their families to minimize disruptions and maintain constructive relationships.

Objectives:

  • Describe the process of managing change and apply these to the dynamics of common transitions in late life
  • Identify the challenges in some specific and common transitions: relocation, becoming widowed, loss of driving, job/daily structure changes, cognitive/health impairments, and death/loss of peers
  • Provide specific and practical strategies for either lessoning the impact of hte changes or managing their progression so that the person's quality of life is maintained at the highest degree possible
