Join us for a program that will answer current questions about Laws and Rules that regulate the practice of nursing. Nurses are required to attend at least one hour of continuing education that focuses on the Nurse Practice Act, and this forum will serve to enhance core knowledge of Chapter 4723 of the ORC and OAC. We will review summary information obtained from the Governor's Annual report from The Ohio Board of Nursing and recognize trends in the changing statistics. We will explore the ‘mission’ of the OBN to protect the public, address ‘Safe Practice’ and be apprised of the consequences of failure to uphold the standards of nursing. This workshop will provide valuable information for nurses in every specialty discipline and highlight some of the challenges in nursing practice today. Addressing the nurses' code of ethics and reviewing standards of safe practice will serve to lead nurses to a more effective role in compliance and support of standards set forth in the Nurse Practice Act.

Objectives:

  • Recognize Chapter 4723 of the ORC as the Law that guides nursing practice
  • Define the mission of the OBN
  • Review summary data from the OBN annual report to the Governor
  • Name 2 consequences of failure to uphold standards of the Nurse Practice Act
  • List 3 standards of safe practice (4723-04)
  • Recognize parameter of delegation (4723-13)
  • Obtain a take home copy of the Nurse Code of Ethics to compare personal practice to ANA Code of Ethics and the Nurse Practice Act

Join us to reflect on some of the primary issues surrounding dementia that baffle and frustrate caregivers both at home and in the field. We'll talk about why we have to find the mirror to talk to that woman… and discuss the brain damage that causes one's own reflection to become suspect. We'll shine a light on the frequency of misdiagnosis and point out how little is known about the conditions that affect millions of people around the world. This forum highlights the state of retro-genesis and differentiates Alzheimer's Disease from other types of dementia to establish the purpose and value of validation therapy versus traditional reality orientation and why! Misunderstanding and jumping to conclusions are natural reactions to the dimentia dilemma, but we'll rise above the confusion and look at the 10 most common behaviors associated with cognitive loss... Recognizing fear of abandonment as an element of the human condition will offer insight into the behaviors that surround issues of infidelity and sexuality. A "return to innocense" often accompanies brain damage and loss of memories that may reveal a new perspective...
A closer look at the top 4 Alzheimer's drugs will offer insights into the various pharmacodynamics and how each addresses a different facet of neurological physiology. FDA warnings, nutrition and non-pharmacological interventions will be offered up for consideration. We'll discuss the "Fast Staging Tool", its purpose and the current drug reduction initiatives taken by the Ohio Department of Health.

  • Differentiate Alzheimer's Disease from other forms of dementia
  • Correlate retrogenesis and visuo-spacial defecits to Alzheimer's Disease
  • List 4 of the most common behaviors associated with Alzheimer's Disease; Recognize fear of abandonment at the core of accusations and physical contact behaviors
  • Identify 2 drugs commonly prescribed for dementia; Name 3 non-phamacological interventions that de-escalate anxiety
  • Utilize the FAST Staging Tool to identify hallmarks of progression of AD rooted in developmental function
  • Compare the conflicting information on drugs, nutrition, and genetic predisposition
