About the Speaker: Dr. Karen A Federspiel, DNP, MS, RN-BC, GCNS-BC

Dr. Federspiel has had a long and interesting career; she actually came to nursing as her third career which she began later in life after first receiving her Bachelors and Master of Science Degrees in Mathematics. She worked as an Actuary pricing homeowners insurance and then taught mathematics at the college level for 10 years. After beginning her family, Karen, who was  always drawn to nursing decided to follow her true calling and returned to school. After receiving her Bachelors in Nursing, Karen began working in a dementia care center where she  developed a passion for patients with Alzheimer’s and their families. She returned to school a third time and received her Master of Science in Nursing and finally her Doctor of Nursing Practice with a focus on the care of patients with dementia and their families. Her research centers around Ambiguous Loss and the effects on the families and caregivers of patients with dementia.

Karen is currently working as a manager of the inpatient psychiatric units at Cleveland Clinic Akron General and spends her free time with her family. She enjoys hiking, computer games and baking in her spare time.
